After graduating from the Graduate School of Engineering, Hokkaido University, in 1977, he joined the Electrotechnical Laboratory where he became a senior research scientist in 1982. In 1991, he was made a Professor in the Department of Information Engineering at Niigata University. He has been involved in research programs relating to non-invasive thermometry, monitoring of radiated electromagnetic energy, and human interface. Jean-Charles Bolomey was born in Paris. He received a degree in electrical engineering from Ecole Supérieure d'Electricité (Supélec), Gif-sur-Yvette, France, in 1963 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Paris XI in 1971. He became Assistant Professor and Professor, in 1974 and 1976 respectively, at the same university. His research activity, conducted in the Electromagnetics Laboratory (Supélec/CNRS), has been devoted to general scattering and diffraction, with attention given to both numerical and experimental aspects. Since 1981, his main field of interest has been in near-field imaging and diagnostic techniques, with special emphasis on biomedical applications, antenna measurements, and nondestructive testing.
