Hospital reformer Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was born in Italy and raised in Derbyshire, England. She studied nursing at the Institute of Saint Vincent de Paul in Alexandria, Egypt, and the Institute for Protestant Deaconesses at Kaiserswerth, Germany. By 1853 she had risen to superintendent of London’s Hospital for Invalid Gentlewomen and seven years later had founded the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses at Saint Thomas's Hospital. Besides Notes on Nursing (1860), she also wrote Notes on Hospitals, Notes on Nursing for the Labouring Classes,, and Suggestions for Thought to Searchers after Religious Truths.Read more about Florence Nightingale in Lytton Strachey’s Eminent Victorians.
