Founded in 1887 in a coastal area known for its beautiful cliffs and rock formations, Ocean Beach went through growing pains in the early 1900s before establishing itself as a family-oriented, self-contained beach community by the mid-1930s. Full of mom-and-pop stores and very walkable, Ocean Beach is a favorite destination for thousands of tourists and San Diegans each year.

The Ocean Beach Historical Society was founded in 1994 by local writer-publisher Carol Bowers, who recruited Beach Town author Ruth Held and a handful of others to serve on the first board of directors. The society collects and preserves items related to the rich history of Ocean Beach and educates residents through monthly programs, an interactive web site, and special events such as an annual narrated walk through historic central Ocean Beach. Its most significant accomplishment to date has been the establishment of the Ocean Beach Cottage Emerging Historical District, which seeks to preserve the area's distinctive early architecture.
