Of Human Bondage is a moving exploration of loneliness, obsessive love, and a young man's search for meaning and direction in life. Written in the third person, it tells the story of Philip Carey, a self-conscious orphan with a club-foot who learns medicine. Not only is this a significant work in the Bildungsroman tradition, but its largely autobiographical basis gives it a special interest in view of the exceptional public success that Somerset Maugham was to enjoy over several decades.
Autoren-Porträt von W. Somerset Maugham
Somerset Maugham was born in Paris in 1874, the sixth child of a British Embassy lawyer. He spoke mainly French until he was about eight. He was orphaned at ten years of age and sent to live in England with an uncle, a vicar, in Whitstable, southeast of London. He was small, shy, sensitive, and introverted, with a stammer that made him acutely self-conscious. Without that youthful stammer, as he later remarked, he would probably have become a lawyer like his father and grandfather before him. In fact, he trained as a doctor. His first novel, Liza of Lambeth, was published while he was still in medical school; it drew on his experiences as a student doctor among some of London's slum-dwellers. With the success of the book he decided not to practice as a doctor, but to instead become a professional writer, a practitioner of literature.
