Motivated by his disgust over both slavery and the Mexican-American War, Thoreau argued that individuals must not permit nor enable their government to act against their own consciences. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American author, naturalist, and philosopher. He was a leading figure in the Transcendentalism movement of the mid-1800s and an outspoken abolitionist. A prolific author and essayist, Thoreau is best known as the author of Walden and Civil Disobedience.
