After teaching various race relations courses for some 35 years, it dawned upon me that the emphasis was on the wrong variable. Whiteness contributed to many social problems but much greater stress was placed on blackness. From early college where was on race practically no emphasis was placed on whiteness. As I researched and thought about it, I could see that whiteness was a larger descriptive and explanatory variable than had been given attention.
Having to write my own text and other materials for the class, the present work is continuing emphasis on trying to understand why and how whiteness became such a trying and problematic subject.

Autoren-Porträt von Gordon D. Morgan
Gordon D. Morgan has been a sociological observer and writer since around 1953. He has written at least 15 published books, the latest of which, 2012, is entitled Whiteness in America. He has taught sociology at the college level since 1958. His research and study have carried him to the Caribbean, Denmark, and Africa and to much of America. He received the Ph.D. in sociology at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington in 1963. He is a recent retiree of the University of Arkansas, where he worked for some 44 years.
