Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 2,3, University of Münster (Englisches Seminar), course: Teaching Literature to Younger Learners of English, 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In today’s early foreign language teaching various media types such as coursebooks, songs, games and authentic children’s literature are available and useful. As authentic children’s books constitute an essential element of early foreign language teaching this term paper concentrates on the use of storybooks in general on the one hand; on the other hand it extensively deals with the examination and usage of one particular book. That is the Paddington Bear picture book, written by Michael Bond, illustrated by Robert W. Alley. Firstly, this term paper discusses general reasons for using storybooks in language teaching in primary schools. Besides giving some universal reasons the given objectives of English in German Primary schools on the basis of the syllabus are taken into consideration.
Secondly the children’s book Paddington Bear and its background will be presented shortly.
Thirdly the book itself will then be carefully examined with respect to criteria judged to be important by Ellis and Brewster in 2002. These criteria include linguistic, psychological, cultural, cognitive and social aspects.
In the fourth and final passage, some possible follow-up activities linked to the picture book will be presented.
