Though known as Ulysses S. Grant, the Ohio native was actually born Hiram Ulysses Grant in 1822. He attended the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, and despite a low class rank, went on to become the appointed General in Chief of all U. S. armies in 1864. Five years later, he was sworn in as President of the United States.
