Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Pedagogy - Miscellaneous Topics, , language: English, abstract: This work attempts to problematize TESOL by exploring the contexts which have produced, legitimized and disseminated the assumptions informing the field from a perspective informed by Critical Pedagogy and a “post-structural” theory of identity. To investigate the complex, dynamic and emergent interactions between identity, transformation and language learning, I explore, through Narrative Inquiry, the changing relationship of two TESOL practitioners throughout multiple stages of their development, and attempt to identify the broader social powers which shape their desires for transformation.
The analysis reveals the struggles involved with claiming an inter-cultural and multilingual identity that opposes the traditional narratives of TESOL. This struggle suggests the need for a restructuring of TESOL practice that acknowledges the learner’s multiple and dynamic identities, considers specific contexts, and is critical of hidden agendas employed by mainstream discourses of TESOL (e.g. native-speakerism, monolingualism, or monoculturalism).
