Dr. Elston R. Perry has had quite an adventurous life and career. He has been a pastor, community organizer, teacher, an administrator, and a janitor, just to name a few reinventions of himself.
He has written three books. His first book, Type J Christians, is about a quiet revolution taking place in Christianity where “Type-J” Christians place love and acceptance over doctrines, denominationalism, and judgmentalism. His second book, Say Amen, Somebody!, is an insider’s guide to pastoral ministry (what they don’t teach you in seminary). It is also a book of leadership that can benefit all leaders. His third book, SUBUNE, is a sacred-word manual for original brothers and original sons. Topics include what is required to be a man, soldier, warrior, and lover.
Dr. Perry is known affectionately as Dr. P by many of his former students and colleagues. He has spent a major portion of his life working with youth and teenage boys who have had challenges in their lives. Many are considered at-risk or beyond risk, having already encountered the juvenile justice system. Dr. P has worked with them as a teacher, counselor, and tutor. He has also been a Scout leader, and while in Florida created a PASSAGE ministry at his church that works directly with boys of color who faced many challenges, including being raised by a single parent, low achievement in school, low economic status, no role models, a juvenile record, and no motivation or self-esteem.
In Oakland, California, he created a weekly elective class called Project ASAP where he developed the curriculum and implemented the program. It grew from ten boys to a waiting list of more than thirty.
Dr. Perry started working with boys as a Boy Scout leader, youth camp counselor, youth camp director, and youth pastor. He has worked at an alternative high school serving as a support staff counselor; a tutor at a juvenile detention center; a teacher; and a head of school.
