The concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI) was used by Salovey and Mayer to refer to the abilities and capacities to perceive and produce emotions that enable thought, to understand those emotions and regulate them with a clear adaptive function of the individual. This plays an important role throughout life, offering a frame of reference for the management of emotions with which a person relates to their environment.
