She is rescued by the handsome, elegant, but enigmatic English gentleman Maxim de Winter, who marries her in a whirlwind romance and takes her to Manderley, his magnificent estate in Cornwall where she is confronted by a huge number of challenges which are revealed step by step through Hitchcock's masterful hand. As usual, he merges plot, setting, and character to create a haunting and unforgettable picture of the cruelties of individuals-and of the English class system.
The story constantly counterposes evil and malice with essential human decency, which is somehow able to stand up to-and triumph over-the bad side of human nature and reveal the promise of genuine love. It is a masterpiece that speaks to the fears and hopes that live in all of us.
