Lawrence M. O’Rourke was a newspaper columnist and reporter who covered the White House, Congress and national politics for 40 years. He was one of 17 U.S. newspaper reporters who traveled to China in 1972 with President Nixon and made reporting trips to the former Soviet Union, divided Berlin, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, O’Rourke was a correspondent in the first Persian Gulf War and the revolution in the Philippines, and was a senior official at the U.S. Department of Education.He reported from Washington for the Philadelphia Bulletin, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the McClatchy newspaper chain. He was president of the White House Correspondents Association and the Gridiron Club.
