The novel described a young man named JulienA*Sorrell, he was from other provinces, low-born, but clever and talented. When he served as a tutor in the family of the local mayor, he seduced the master's young wife and after that he hooked up with a noble lady in Paris. The mayor's wife exposed his ugly deeds out of jealousy. And he was so angry that he shot the mayor's wife and finally he was sentenced to death by the court on the charge of premeditated murder. The protagonist Julien was a representative of petty bourgeoisie young people in that generation. The persecution and influence from the upper class as well as the proud loneliness and wild ambition of the individual are the roots of the Julien's tragedy. The charm of this novel also lies in that the author ingeniously endows the novel with the strong political color.
