Vitality is the essence of life. Social vitality is the most basic condition and driving force of social development. Dr. Dong Hui's "e;Theory of Social Vitality"e;, a doctoral dissertation that discussed social vitality for the first time in China, and painted a sweeping picture of a series of related basic issues. The author reviews the history of thoughts on social vitality in and outside China, discusses the Marxist view of social vitality, explores in a comprehensive and systematic way the basic rules, theoretical positioning, practice, roots in human nature, spiritual origin and institutional assurance, etc., and further reexamines and criticizes elements that hinder the development and activity of social vitality in China from multiple perspectives, before exploring possible approaches to reinforcing social vitality. My comment on this book and the author in the preface goes: 'The author intends to construct a vital society where freedom of the individual is given full play and society can develop in a harmonious and orderly manner through philosophical discussion and examination. Her endeavor is conducive to enriching the research on historical materialism and deepening the understanding of the Chinese economic reform, and at the same time demonstrates her theoretical courage and scholarly attainments, as well as her ability to grasp major issues in reality. The topic chosen is exploratory and the result is relevant and of important academic significance.
