After the Disaster of Yongjia multitude of cultural elite families migrated southward. The Southern regime was politically conservative and militarily incompetent, but culturally it flourished. Philosophy, painting, calligraphy and music, etc. all enjoyed further development. The literary scene was also kaleidoscopic. Tone pattern was given precedence in poetic creation, which laid a solid foundation for the prosperity of Tang poetry; pianwen took form and matured into a genre unique to Chinese literature and an equal to Western literary genres; literary criticism reached its pinnacle, with such unprecedented masterworks as The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons and Tastes of Poetry. Literature became a criterion to evaluate talents at the time. According to Book of Liang: Biography of Jiang Yan, "e;While Western and Eastern Han favored scholars of classics, contemporary society prefer literary and history prodigies"e;.
