Lese-Probe zu „Summary: Summary of Isaac Asimov's, "The Dark Ages" (ePub)“
Isaac Asimov combined a prodigious mind , with an unquenchable thirst for learning, and a flowing and untiring pen. His encyclopaedic knowledge centers in mankind , its history and the history of its discovery's. It is this approach , which makes his books on science so entertaining, as they describe the history of scientific discovery, as well as the discoveries themselves. This is done in a straigthforward way, helping the reader easily grasp the subject matter. Russian born, since early childhood he lived and was educated in New York , graduating in biochemistry from Columbia University in 1.939, when he was barely 19 years old. He became popular, (and rich), thanks to his science fiction books, (over fifty titles, many best sellers), which, while entertaining, gave him a somewhat frivolous image which berated his enromous intelectual capacity. He published a series of 14 history books , such as the Roman Republic, The Shaping of England, The Shaping of France, The Birth of the United Sattes, etc., all of which are highly erudite, and yet very entertaining. This is Asimov's great gift, he is never boring, however dry and dreary the subject matter of his book might seem at first sight. The Dark Ages describes the formation and initial history of the nations of central and south Western Europe , which rose from the Frankish Empire, which in turn took up, after a few centuries, the space left by the fall of the Roman Western Empire, in year 466. It opens with Clovis, King of the Ripuarian Franks, a tribal nation, that went from being a minor tribe in the northwest of France , to become lords and masters of the lands which today, are occupied by France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and Italy. A new Empire which reached its peak in year 800 under Charles the Great, whose death inaugurated a fraticidal struggle that would lead to the formation of germanic Austrasia and the romanic Neustria, ancestor kingdoms of todays Germany Holland and Austria and of

France, Belgium, and Switzerland. The book covers the story of those kingdoms until the year 1.000 , when European nations start to progress notably after centuries of stagnation, mired in poverty and brutality. Feudalism provided cheap labour which slowly became organized under the most advanced nobles, and the introducction of the furrowing plough and the collar harness greatly, allowed farmers to grow wheat and other cereals in northern Europe, where muddy fields had made this impractical before those introductions. These advances, and the relative peace brought about by the treaties between the different kingdoms, resulted in a population increase, which translated in larger and stronger armies, better prepared to defend the new European Nations from foreign invaders. Thus with the close of the first milenium, the Dark Ages also came to a close, a 500 year period so called by historians , not only because of the sudden disappearance of written chronicles which followed the fall of the Roman Empire, but because of the practical dissapearance of all of the Empire's cultural and administrative legacy during those centuries. Summarizing requires extracting the essential thread of a book for the reader, in order to help him/ her retain the core of the subject matter. This implies the ommission of many secondary stories, and of descriptions and commnents which make Asimov's book so entertaining. Hopefully the reader will find in the brevity of summary, offered as an E-Pub in this collection, compensation for its inherent shortcomings.
