While Astronomy is the science which studies our Universe as we see it today, Cosmology focuses on its origin and evolution. The study of the sky at night, that is of our Universe, has attracted brilliant minds, including those of Newton, Kant, and Einstein, as well that of Stephen Weinberg, whose book I summarize in these pages. During the 19th century, modern telescopes , space probes, and very significantly, space telescope Hubble, have allowed us to get to know our Solar System in depth, and to determine the structure and composition of our Galaxy. It has also allowed us to understand and accept that our Universe holds billions of galaxies, and that it continues to expand. Two key discoveries have consolidated a theory of the origin of the Universe , which today is considered unchallengeable; this theory is known as The Standard Model , which includes the Big Bang theory. The Big Bang theory proclaims the explosive origin of our Universe., and its continued expansion since then. The first of these discoveries, was made by Edward Hubble in 1933, who realized there is a directly proportional relationship between the redshiftof a galaxy's light spectrum, (that is, the apparent decrease in frequency from the light we receive from a galaxy), and the speed with which it moves away from us. Hubble used this discovery to calculate the distance of the galaxy from Earth. The second discovery was the verification of the existence in our Universe of a non directional background radiation , predicted by The Standard Model Theory and detected in 1.965 by American physicists Robert W. Wilson and Arno Penzias .This radiation is very long wave, ( and therefore very low energy, of an equivalent temperature of only 4ºF), and was caused by the Big Bang , approximately 15.000, (fifteen billion), million years ago. These two discoveries are the foundation stones of The Standard Model Theory which proposes that at time zero,(or, better said, at space-time zero, for both dimensions

originated at the same time and in cosmological terms are regarded as one dimension), our Universe, all of it, was compressed into a singularity, that is an "infinetely small point", which exploded in a huge surge of inconceivably high energy. The explosion also originated space- time, the media in which the energy, that is radiation, expanded, dropping in frequency , or (same thing, gaining in wave length), as it did so, so that when it reached us over 10.000 million light years later it had dropped to the very low energy levels detected by Wilson and Penzias. Steven Weinberg's best selling book , The First Three Minutes of the Universe, is a straightforward description of the origin and evolution of our Universe following the Standard Model. The author is a U.S. scientist , and Nobel prize laureate ( Physics 1979), for his work with Abdus Salam, and Sheldon Lee Glashow, on the Electroweak Model. While the book is intended to be an introduction, I feel some parts are too dense for a lay reader. Accordingly my summary ommits exceedingly technical discussions, and focuses on the main arguments, hoping that by so doing readers will enjoy this first introduction to Cosmology.
