The author grew up in New York State in a large Italian-American community where Italian customs and traditions were celebrated with enthusiasm. Inspired by her Italian immigrant grandparents she became interested in genealogy research as it relates to the millions of Italians who came to the U.S. during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Her ancestors, their life in Italy, the prejudices they endured, and the challenges they faced both in Italy and in America are the backdrop for much of her writing.
