Produktinformationen zu „The Architecture of Humanism (World Digital Library Edition) (PDF)“
In the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s the modern concepts of utility and pragmatism seemed poised to overwhelm the European cultural tradition. The Romantic Movement responded by espousing the use of symbolism in art and literature to connect man with the high aesthetic values. Geoffrey Scott disagreed. He felt that the Romantic Movement was transient and ephemeral since it merely reflected the taste of the moment and was subject to the vagaries of public opinion. In his Architecture of Humanism Scott argues that neither the Gothic nor Romantic form had the human relevance epitomized by the Classicism of Greece and Rome. He believed that it was in the rediscovery of these themes during the Renaissance, and their subsequent development by the artists and artisans of that period which instilled in Classicism the humanistic values he deemed fundamental to enduring building use and design.
