The Book of Household Management, published in book form in London in 1861, is the definitive British cookbook of the Victorian era. However, far more than simply being a mammoth collection of recipes—and that, it most certainly is, containing more than 1,800 entries concerning food and its preparation—it is also a compendium of housekeeping information: how to hire servants, how to remove stains, medical handbook, childcare manual, and even a legal advisor—all rolled into one. Enormously successful in its time—some 60,000 copies were sold in its debut year—it provided English middle-class readers with practical advice for which they would have needed to locate multiple sources. In this sense, Beeton’s was the first major household guide in the world to offer the literary equivalent of "one-stop shopping." As its original purchasers may be assumed to have faithfully followed its advice, to modern readers the tome therefore presents a trustworthy, comprehensive portrait of everyday Victorian English home life.

While one might be tempted to imagine that Isabella Beeton was a plump matron with many years of cooking under her apron’s belt, this was far from the case. She was only twenty-one when the project began. The newlywed bride of Sam Beeton, she not only wrote and edited for his magazines, but also bore several children. We may never know what else this indefatigable and unique journalist might have produced, because she died at the age of twenty-eight, a casualty of the birth of her fourth child.
