The Great Interregnum of Kingdom of Germany was left behind as Rudolf was elected the King in 1273. The old enemies finally come to an impasse, when Duchess of Limburg dies childless, and powerful Adolf of Berg conspires with John of Brabant to not only to claim the powerful but near-leaderless Duchy, but also to utterly overthrow the Luxembourg family and shatter its alliances with the Electorate of Cologne, the powerful, much hated Archbishop Siegfried II. In this attempt, Adolf and John of Brabant spare no means, and Henry of Luxembourg and his allies find themselves on a brink of war, and soon over it.

A long war is about to start, and Luxembourg vassal, knight Friedrich is sent with his family to defend Limburg's borders. With Friedrich travel his sons, many troubled men amongst them, but none as much as godless Konrad, shattered by the loss of his wife. Upon settling to Thorn, Konrad finds a cause in vengeance, and also in surprising love, and becomes a bitter enemy to the famous Count Adolf. A man apparently abandoned by God, Konrad's fate is to thwart the terrible Count and his family, but a Count who sends not only knights and sergeants to attack Limburg, also seeks Konrad's weaknesses, and none is better in such nefarious work than the killer called the Cur of Prague, a man aided by the devil himself, as the rumors go. 

Will Konrad save his family, and the woman he loves while bringing low his adversaries, and will Konrad have to step even further away from God, and into the bosom of the Old Serpent himself in order to find victory and safety to those he loves from Adolf and the Cur?
