Born in Punjab, India, on 1847 May 22, to British parents, he was an early proponent of mental science and the power of thought. Educated in England, Troward served as a Divisional Judge in British-administered India, which provided him ample time to delve into the philosophical and religious texts of the subcontinent. His integration of Eastern and Western thought helped forge his unique philosophical outlook. After his retirement from the judiciary in 1896, Troward's literary career began in earnest, producing a body of work that focused on the interconnectedness of the universal law of cause and effect and the power of individual thought.
