This book examines, from an Asian perspective, the debates about how higher education should change. It considers questions of funding; of who will attend universities, and the fundamental question of what universities are for, especially as the three key functions of universities - knowledge creation, knowledge dissemination and knowledge conservation - are increasingly being carried out outside universities in the new "knowledge society".
Deane Neubauer currently serves as Senior Advisor to the International Forum for Education 2020 at the East-West Center, and as Senior Research Fellow to the Globalization Research Center, University of Hawaii, Manoa. He recently co-edited Access, Capacity and Equity in Asia Pacific Higher Education.
