Youssef Ezeddin Eassa1914 – 1999
Egyptian Novelist and Professor of Zoology. Graduated from Cairo University. Obtained PH. D. from Sheffield, England. Also a Fulbrighter in Illinois and Berkeley Universities 1961 -1962.
Eassa mastered all forms of writing; wrote 9 novels, around 200 short stories, , 6 plays, tens of poems and over a hundred articles in Egypt’s most prominent newspapers and magazines. Moreover, was the pioneer of Radio Drama in Egypt and the Middle East.
Youssef Ezeddin Eassa is known for his fertility of imagination. He merges fantasy, dream and fact; uses psychology and symbols to create his own world of magical reality. He is one of the first modernists in the Middle East who broke the traditional barriers of the Arabic Novel.
Eassa was granted various literary awards, among which are: The High National Award for Letters, The National Prize for Letters, The Badge of Arts and Sciences of First Degree (received it twice), The Republic State Prize, and the Knighthood Badge for Letters. Selected Best Man of Letters in Egypt, 1998 – 1999.
Eassa continued to practice both careers, until the last year of his life. Some unfinished drafts were found and published posthumously.
