In Junior High, I memorized the Sermon on the Mount. I was bored in a church membership class and wanted a challenge. I had little concern for what the words meant. That changed in the mid 1990's after I had attended a number of intensive Buddhist retreats in the Vipassana tradition. I was struck by the similarity between some of Jesus's words in the Sermon on the Mount and the teachings of Buddha. Thus began a project, now decades long, of attempting to integrate the two. The result is this little book.

I grew up on an Iowa farm with leisure for wonder. I was a philosophy major in college and graduate school. For over 25 years, I taught philosophy as an elective in a well known public high school. Upon early retirement in 1994, I continued to teach but in Older Adult programs, first in the Chicago area and continuing in Milwaukee, where I now live. My description of myself is "free lance philosopher".
