Produktinformationen zu „The Love Poems of Robert Herrick and John Donne (PDF)“
“I do not love to wed, / Though I do like to woo,” wrote Robert Herrick, who died as a bachelor. His lyrical poetry, though containing many Classical allusions, is fresh and simple. The author of many love poems, he writes advice to virgins and descriptions of the type of mistress he desires.John Donne, in contrast to Herrick, is the type of poet who married the woman he loved even though it meant having to go to jail because of his disapproving father-in-law. Writing most of his evocative love poems in the 1950s, the decade before his marriage, his poems are full of aching passion.
Autoren-Porträt von John Donne, Robert Herrick
A. C. Swinburne called Robert Herrick, “The greatest song-writer ever born of the English race.” Herrick was an ordained Episcopal minister who, in his youth, had been one of the Cavalier poets of the “Sons of Ben” literary circle. He rose from a tragic childhood – his father had committed suicide a year after his birth – to become one of the foremost poets of his time. He was born in Cheapside, London, in 1581, and passed away in Devon, Exeter, in 1674.The founder of the Metaphysical Poets, a group that used oxymoronic imagery, John Donne was born into a Catholic family at a time when Catholics were being persecuted in England. After his own brother was killed for his beliefs Donne reluctantly joined the Anglican Church. The author of many prayerful poems then was forced to take a role in ministry in the Anglican Church when James I said it was the only place he could be employed. He was born in London, in 1572, and died there in 1631.
