Produktinformationen zu „The Montessori Method (World Digital Library Edition) (PDF)“
In The Montessori Method Maria Montessori describes a child as a sponge aching to absorb knowledge, and points out that the first six years of a child’s life are the most important for learning and development. The text itself outlines the Montessori method, beginning with the ideas of Freedom and Discipline. Classroom rules are kept to a minimum since Discipline is “self-discipline” in the Montessori classroom. Freedom is the freedom of self-expression. Montessori insisted that all people, especially children, are inherently creative and will move towards a system of self-discipline if they are given the freedom to discover that need for themselves.

Maria Montessori, M.D. was born in 1870 and upon graduation from medical school in 1896 became Italy’s first female physician. In 1899 she became director of the State Orthophrenic School where she first became involved with early childhood education. In 1906 she opened her first Casa dei Bambini or “Children’s House” in Italy and seven years later, with the assistance of Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel, the Montessori Educational Association was founded in Washington, D.C.
In 1922, after traveling and working in Spain, Montessori was appointed a government inspector of schools in her native Italy, but because of her opposition to Mussolini’s fascism, she was forced to leave Italy in 1934, settling in Barcelona, Spain. During the Spanish Civil War, she moved to Laren, Netherlands, where she opened a Montessori Training Center in 1938. Before Dr. Montessori died in Noordwijk, Holland in 1952, she had been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times. Today, the Association Montessori Internationale continues her important work.
