"Good night m'am," she said just before closing the door behind her. To my dismay she had left me alone in the room to await whatever my husband determined.

"Good night, Phoebe," I managed, speaking to the closing wall.

My body was rigid with fear. My saliva caught in my throat. I could feel my pulse pounding in my ears. My breath came in rapid, short pants as I stared at the door through which I expected Charles Beckford to enter.

When he kissed the back of my neck I nearly jumped through the ceiling.
