Walter Pater’s Studies in the History of the Renaissance was one of the most talked about books in nineteenth-century Britain, and it remains a work of unusual importance to anyone interested in art history or English literature. Pater’s luxurious and finely wrought style inspired generations of writers, and his unique blend of scholarship, philosophy, and personal bias made his view of the quintessential ‘spirit of the renaissance’ a key subject for subsequent aesthetic debate.
Autoren-Porträt von Walter Pater
Born in 1839 in Shadwell, East London, Walter Horatio Pater was the second of four children. His father Richard Glode Pater was a physician, and after his death in 1842, the family moved to Chase Side, Enfield. Walter went to grammar school there, until he was enrolled at King’s School, Canterbury in 1853. In 1858, he entered Queens College Oxford, where he read Classics and was deeply influenced by the ideas of John Ruskin (1819-1900). At Oxford, he was Oscar Wilde’s tutor. In 1864, he was elected as a Fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford, which would remain his spiritual home for the rest of his life. He died in Oxford in 1894.
