Introduction (p. 11) Antoine-Francois Prévost died on November 25,1763, of what now appears to have been an aneurysm. Upon the request of the Benedictine superiors of the Priory of Saint Nicolas d`Acy, his body was interred in the monastery chapel which was to be completely destroyed some thirty years later along with most of the other buildings on the property during one of the most ruinous periods of the French Revolution.
Yet today in the park of the reconstructed priory stands a mosscovered marker bearing the following inscription:
Hic Jacet
D. Antonius Prévost
Sacerdos majoris ordin. S. Benedicti
monachus professus quam plurimis
voluminibus in lucem editis insignitus
Obiit 25 novembris 1763
Requiescat in pace.
Freely translated, this inscription reads: "Here lies Dom Antoine Prévost, a priest of the greater order of Saint Benedict, a duly authorized monk renowned for having brought into the light of day a great many books, he died on November 25, 1763, may he rest in peace."
The marker`s inscription points, however, to one of the striking paradoxes of the literary history of eighteenth-century France: an author widely recognized in his day for having written "quam plurimis voluminibus" is recognized in ours for having written only one, the Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut.
The association of Prévost`s name with this one novel has resulted in a symbiotic pairing of author and work to the extent that one is ubiquitously exchanged for the other. André de Maricourt`s choice of title for his 1932 biographyCe Bon Abloe Prevost, I`Auteur de Manonunderscores the fact that "Prevost" has long been synonymous with "the author of Manon Lescaut."
The linking of the writer with this one specific novel originated, furthermore, not with the twentieth century but rather with the nineteenth. Numerous Romantics in England, Germany, and France were captivated by Manon Lescaut during the first decades

of the last century.
Sufficiently entranced themselves by what later came to be labelled the "Manon mystique," Massenet and later Puccini composed operas based upon Prevost`s story. Scholarly studies followed suit, investigating in detail and with varying degrees of success different aspects of the novel.
Book-length works on Prevost, Maricourt`s for one notable example, have thus been wont to devote more time to this one work than to either the author or the rest of his substantial ceuvre.
This peculiarly slanted situation has now been for at least two decades under attack on many fronts. In 1963 the late scholar and renowned authority on eighteenth-century France, Jean Fabre, convened a colloquium on Prevost at Aixen- Provence under the auspices of the Faculte de Lettres.
During this meeting there were several calls by specialists for a broader acknowledgement of Prevost`s works other than Manon Lescaut.
Why, these individuals asked, has tradition consistently neglected the Pour et Contre, Cleveland, the Histoire des voyages, the continuing puzzles about the Abbe`s some- times erratic life, his place in the critical fortunes of the English novel in France, his Histoire d`une Grecque modernel And then coupled to this desire on the part of many prominent teachers and critics was the goal of bringing out a critical edition of the Abbe`s works.
