“...[W]orth a hundred Sherlock Holmes stories.” That was how Arthur Conan Doyle characterized The White Company, the book he considered his best work. Set against the background of the Hundred Years War, an extended conflict between France and England, The White Company rivals the best works of historical romance. Not only is it richly textured with accurate historical detail, it features several memorable characters: Sir Nigel Loring and Alleyne, his squire, as well as Hordle John, a lovable rogue, and Allewyn, the master archer.
Autoren-Porträt von Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was an average student, interested more in athletics than scholarship, though he did devour literature well beyond his assigned readings, in particular the work of Sir Walter Scott. Studying medicine, he attended the University of Edinburgh and, as his scholarship improved, left with a doctorate. Struggling with a general practice in Southsea, Doyle took advantage of the empty waiting room and began writing his Sherlock Holmes series.
