The year is 1856, only a few days before William Upshur's tenth Birthday, and was the day the Upshur farm was raided and his family brutally murdered. He was sole survivor of a planned massacre that left him with nothing but his memories, and troubled dreams filled with revenge.
Convinced he would never find those responsible, he spent the next five years in recuperative torment, then to leave his adopted family in 1861 to enlist in the war,...hoping to satisfy his hatred, and hunger for revenge.
Could he learn to survive in a cruel, war-ravaged land? Can a boy really cope with the death and brutality of a man's war? Would it be enough to quell his hatred and desire for vengeance? Could he live long enough to quench that desire?...Who knows?
This is the story of Upshur, one of hate, love, intrigue and death, during a time of of war, distrust, schemes, cruelty and revenge.
A dark time in the annals of history, and the journey a boy takes to become the man, they called Reb!

Autoren-Porträt von Otis Morphew
I am not a professional writer, and to some, I may not even be qualified. But I am an illustrator/Artist, and I love writing about the old west the way it actually was, not an Italian western, or Roy Rogers. I live in paris, Texas, and have been drawing and painting pictures of the old west all my life, it seems. My novel is about a boy who's parents were violently murdered. William Upshur was ten when he was forced to watch it, and then he was left for dead. It was typical in those days to hate, and to seek revenge, but at fifteen, he went to war, hoping to put it all behind him,...but that was when it started. My character is a gunfighter with a conscience, he feels regret, and remorse, he hates what he does. But he is driven by hate, and nightmarish dreams that force him to relive the murders. He cries, falls in love, gets married and has a son,...and then is filled with heart break when he returns home. There his quest is terminated, as well as his life,...legally.
Not much had been written, novel-wise about Paris, Texas, as the recorded history of the times were burned in the great fire of 1877. Therefore, my novel contains, some actual names along the way, actual places of the times, etc.
I began my art career at the age of six, when I drew my tricycle. I found out later, my grandmother was an art teacher, and Artist. I was inspired, and it stuck with me. I am a self-taught Author, and Artist. I have worked hard all my life at different jobs, while practicing my art. I have published one novel, that some readers say should be a movie,...I don't know. What I do know is that I want to sell my western novels, because they are different than the usual run of the mill.
Paris, Texas was incorporated in 1849, and has a history that no one tries to mention in print, especially in novels. But it is here, and so am I, and They called him Reb, is my best effort. I have illustrated it with 18 drawings. I am 70 years old and trying to live my dream.
Thanks,
