Produktinformationen zu „Travels In West Africa (PDF)“
Travels in West Africa, the first of three books written by Mary Kingsley, details with quick, dry wit the adventures Kingsley experienced as the first European to travel into remote areas of Gabon. In search of rare specimens, she sailed from the coast of present-day Nigeria, to Gabon and Cameroon, and along the Congo River region of what is now northern Angola on her first trip to West Africa (1893-1894).What truly sets her book apart is her refusal to adopt the widely held perceptions of the day, which considered Africans as little more than savages. She strips away the highly romanticized nineteenth century notion of the continent and its people, and instead amuses the reader with tales of fending off crocodiles by “thwacking them on the head” and observations of the fierce and cannibalistic Fan tribe.
Autoren-Porträt von Mary H. Kingsley
There is little in Mary Kingsley’s Victorian upbringing that would foreshadow her intrepid travels. Beyond the stories her father, a physician who preferred travel to medicine, told of his adventures, Kingsley seldom had contact with the world beyond her home. With the passing away of her parents, she had the opportunity to travel and write the book her father had planned to compose on African laws and customs. At thirty-one years of age, she ventured to West Africa, where she discovered previously unknown wildlife, and became a trailblazer for many young girls. On her third trip, she went to South Africa to nurse the injured Boer prisoners of war, and contracted typhoid fever. She died on June 3, 1900, at the age of thirty-eight and, according to her instructions, was buried at sea.
