Born in 1952 in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, Em West was educated in Yorkshire, before qualifying and working as a radiographer for a few years before attending the University of Leeds where she gained a PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine and worked in human medical research.

At school English was her best subject and she won a National prize for poetry in 1963.
