However, in the wake of the rise of Li Zicheng-led insurrectionaries, the extinction of the Ming Dynasty and the arrival of Manchus, Rongmei again fell into the heartless vortex created by history. In process of alternation of dynasties, the Tusi Tian Zilin died of worry and indignation, Tian Jilin departed depressively in hopeless love for his elder brother's wife Meiduo, Tian Shunnian was betrayed by his eldest son, and Tian Mingru, who benefited from the contention, became the final Tusi of Rongmei. By describing love and hate, the writer reveals the magnificent, changeful history of the minority in west Hunan with a soul-stirring ethnic epic.
