But Mary Ellen refused to give in to despairand she found that exercising, eating a balanced diet, thinking positively, and cognitive behavioral therapy did wonders for her mind and body.

Mary Ellen Guiney earned a biochemistry degree from the National University of Galway, Ireland, and also has a master’s degree in finance. She worked for Samsung Electronics and JP Morgan in London before deciding to earn a master’s degree in nutrition. She suffers from schizophrenia, and regular exercise has helped further her wellness and recovery. She completed her first Olympic triathlon in August 2015 and plans to continue exercising to promote mental and physical health.
