As the saying goes, "e;It takes ten years to hone a sword"e;. The same is true of Dang Yueyi's monograph! In 2001, as an on-the-job postgraduate Dang Yueyi was accepted by School of Literature, Shandong Normal University and chose me as her supervisor. Now thirteen years have passed. It seems a case of serendipity, that she made a unique impression on me the first time we met. As a rule, I repeated the same line I have always told students at our first meeting: "e;What you learned from kindergarten to undergraduate years were basics, like 1ii But from postgraduate program onward the stage of inquiry-based learning begins. You must understand things like 1ii I also gave an example of how the production team in the field divide the sweet potatoes: "e;A pile plus a pile is still a pile, a bigger pile."e; Most students would simply laugh, but she seemed to have really grasped what I meant. Then it was time to make the thesis proposal. I have taught modern literature to undergraduate students for more than a decade, and discovered that Wang Tao was indeed a key figure in the history of modern literature, a pioneer worthy of more research. However I was occupied with pre-Qin literature, so I advised her to investigate Wang Tao's novels written in classical Chinese. Probably because she used to teach literary history at the university and knew something about Wang Tao, she immediately agreed and soon worked out the topic of her thesis, "e;On Wang Tao's Classical Chinese Novels"e;, before completing the outline in surprising speed.
