Henrietta Nesbitt, originally a bakery owner in Hyde Park, New York, served as housekeeper and head cook for Franklin D. Roosevelt when the Roosevelts moved into the White House in 1933. Under Mrs. Nesbitt's direction, the cuisine in the White House soon became known for its non-glamorous, down to earth characteristics.
