Gertrude Jeykll was born in London in 1843. She perceived garden making as a fine art ranked with painting, sculpture, and architecture. In the late 1800’s she began to work with the noted architect Edwin Lutyens, blending the formal and natural philosophies of their disciplines to create the ideal suburban home. By her death in 1932, her combination of practical horticultural knowledge and artistic design talent had led to the publication of 13 books, over a thousand articles and over two thousand plans for some 250 gardens.
