In the Iberian Peninsula, copper processing is attested first in the late 4th millennium
BC. It seems to coincide with a period of disruptive change and innovation, the first
gold finds and, in the South and West, the formation of large fortified settlements as Zambujal (Estremadura, Portugal). The results of archaeometallurgical and mining archaeological investigations of the Zambujal-project indicate that the ore found in Chalcolithic settlements in Estremadura originated from the Ossa Morena zone and was traded over a distance of at least 100 km along a trade route well known since the Neolithic. Through the reconstruction of the chaîne opératoire and the sociocultural contexts of metallurgy it becomes apparent that the innovation in copper production did not yet play a prominent role in economic and existential terms. The studies are completed by contributions to other South-West Iberian regions, to methodological problems of mining archaeology, and a multilingual glossary. Auf der Iberischen Halbinsel ist Kupferverarbeitung seit dem späten 4. Jt. v. Chr. nachgewiesen, das durch konfliktreiche Umwälzungen, Innovationen, erste Goldfunde und, im Süden und Westen, große befestigte Siedlungen wie Zambujal (Estremadura, Portugal) gekennzeichnet ist. Die archäometallurgischen und montanarchäologischen Ergebnisse des Zambujal-Projekts weisen auf die Ossa Morena Zone als Herkunftsgebiet des Erzes aus kupferzeitlichen Siedlungen der Estremadura. Es wurde über eine Entfernung von mindestens 100 km auf einer seit dem Neolithikum bekannten Handelsroute transportiert. Durch die Rekonstruktion der chaîne opératoire und des sozio-kulturellen Kontexts der Metallurgie zeigt sich, dass das Metallhandwerk wirtschaftlich-existentiell noch keine große Rolle spielte. Die Studien werden ergänzt durch Beiträge zu anderen Regionen des Südwestens der Halbinsel, methodischen Problemen der Archäometallurgie sowie ein mehrsprachiges Glossar.
