During evolution many species adapted to dry environments by developing the ability to store water in their stems, leaves or roots. These "Succulents" can be found in a wide range of plant families. They are all native to arid or semi-arid conditions and show some degree of xerophytic adaptation. This handbook, consisting of six volumes, contains entries to over 9000 taxa of succulents (excluding cacti). In addition to the volumes on monocotyledons and dicotyledons, separate volumes are devoted to those families which contain the greatest variety of succulent species, namely Aizoaceae, Asclepiadaceae and Crassulaceae. Following an alphabetical listing of families, genera and species, detailed diagnostic descriptions are given. These descriptions include data on the distribution, taxonomy, economic impact, ecology and keys to genera or species. Over 2000 superb colour photographs complete this systematic description of succulent plants
