Syl Arena studierte Werbefotografie am Books Insitute und Kunstfotografie an der University of Arizona. Im Laufe der Jahre fotografierte er für Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Kataloge. Er wird allgemein für sein Expertenwissen zum farbkritischen Arbeiten und seine Fähigkeit geschätzt, den Tag zur Nacht zu machen, indem er ein Dutzend Speedlites gleichzeitig abfeuert, die das natürliche Tageslicht vollkommen ersetzen und so neue Lichtsituationen schaffen, die natürlichen Lichtverhältnisse also umkehren. Syl Arena beschreibt die Welt der Fotografie in seinen Blogs, er wirkt außerdem als Director der "Paso Robles Workshops".
