Eötvös-Medaille 1967, Erwin-Schrödinger-Preis, Max-Planck-Medaille, Ehrendoktorat der Comenius-Universität Bratislava, Henri-Poincare-Preis der Int. Association of Mathematical Physics. Thirrings große Liebe gilt der Musik, und hier besonders der Orgel und der Komposition.
