Diagnosing and managing type 2 diabetes presents an enormous challenge to the primary care provider confronted with multiple emerging scientific insights, therapeutic strategies and risk reduction principles. In Type 2 Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, and the Metabolic Syndrome: The Primary Care Guide to Diagnosis and Management, Second Edition, Ronald A. Codario, M.D., FACP -- a well-known and highly respected authority on diabetes -- details the state-of-the-art in diagnosing, managing and attenuating risks in patients with this disease.
Utilizing his extensive experience in private practice, medical education and clinical research for over 35 years, Dr. Codario explains in simple clinical terms, the current understanding of the pathophysiology of diabetes, the latest clinical trials, developing controversies, updates on new medications and an expanded section on Special Populations. With his unique, multiple board certifications in clinical hypertension, vascular medicine, internal medicine, vascular ultrasound and clinical lipidology, Dr. Codario provides practical guidelines for treatment with insulin and oral agents, lipid and hypertension control and comprehensive risk reduction strategies.
Extensively reviewed are the metabolic syndrome, the role of exercise and nutrition, and key issues associated with herb and nutriceutical use. Illustrative case studies in diabetes management, an outstanding bibliography of suggested readings, and extensive chapter subheadings for quick reference make this book a practical, easy-to-read guide for dealing with this killer disease.
Type 2 Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, and the Metabolic Syndrome: The Primary Care Guide to Diagnosis and Management, Second Edition is the direct result of many years of listening, teaching, lecturing and empathizing with fellow primary care providers and their patients in the ongoing fight against diabetes. Like the internationally acclaimed first edition, this is a must read and invaluable guide for all primary care providers, students, caregivers and patients battling the ravages of this ever increasing epidemic.

This second edition will feature updates for all chapters, including references as needed and, most importantly, the latest outcomes data for lipids, hypertension and overall risk reduction. It will also include a new chapter on incretins, amylin analogues and DPP-IV inhibitors as well as an expanded section on lipid disorders in the diabetic patient. New information on the role of the incretin system in the pathophysiology of the disease will also be detailed. Existing chapters will be edited for better brevity to accommodate the new chapters being added and to contain the length of the book to approximately 250 to 300 pages. Although it will not include CME certification, the feature of several multiple choice questions will be retained at the end of each chapter to add value.

Rezension zu „Type 2 Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, and the Metabolic Syndrome “
From the reviews of the second edition:"This book provides a foundation for understanding and treating patients with prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, and the complications associated with these disorders. ... This would be most useful as a reference for medical students, residents, and primary care physicians. This second edition is an improvement upon the first edition, including as it does new medications and details of treatment of special populations such as pregnant patients, mental health patients, geriatric patients, AIDS patients, and dialysis patients." (Colleen Flynn, Doody's Review Service, February, 2011)
"The book presents somewhat unusual, but very practical and progressive form of presentation. ... some approaches to reduce the risk in diabetic patients (glycemic and lipid control, thrombosis prevention etc.) and problems of diabetes in special populations (children, women, geriatric patients, postoperative patients) are also treated with a great care. In the front of each chapter appears a very helpful overview of individual sections and, at the end there is also a very helpful list of supplementary reading." (Endocrine Regulations, June, 2011)
"This is the second edition of a comprehensive text on diabetes and associated syndromes. ... The tables on mechanisms of action of oral agents, insulin preparations and timing, and lipoprotein abnormalities and therapeutic choices are exceedingly useful. Important clinical trials of glycemic, lipid, and blood pressure management in diabetes are comprehensively covered. ... Type 2 Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, and the Metabolic Syndrome may appeal to a variety of health professionals who care for persons with these disorders." (John A. Colwell, Journal of the American Medical Association, July, 2011)
