Karl Hess received a PhD in Physics/Mathematics from the University of Vienna. He has been a member of the faculty at the University of Vienna, Austria (Applied Physics) and, since 1977, of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Hess' research interests encompass solid-state physics, solid-state electronics, nano-science and technology, supercomputing applications, nano-structure simulation and, most recently, quantum optics, quantum information and quantum computing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the APS and the AAAS and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a member of both the National Academy of Engineering (2001) and the National Academy of Sciences (2003). Dr. Hess was appointed to the National Science Board in 2006 by President George W. Bush. In 2009, Hess became a foreign member of ACATECH, the National Academy of Engineering of Germany.
