This book discusses the role of optical networks in 3G, 4G, 5G and beyond. The authors discuss the evolution of the technologies, the research involved, and the applications with respect to optical communication systems. In addition, the book provides in-depth knowledge of broadband connectivity for future generation networks. More focus is given towards the front-, mid- and back- hauling of 5G and beyond. The authors present architecture for broadband connectivity and explain its potential in 5G and beyond applications. This book includes several architectures based on Hybrid Fiber-Wireless; Next Generation Passive Optical Networks Stage 1 and 2; millimeter wave over fiber; sub-THz wave over fiber; millimeter/sub-THz wave over multicore fiber; 6G fronthaul; 6G backhaul; GMPLS networks, and massive MIMO sub-Thz antenna. The contributors provide supplementary material such as simulations, analysis and experiments.

Gurpreet Kaur obtained her bachelor's degree in ECE from IET, Bhaddal, Ropar, India, and a master's degree from Punjabi University, Patiala, India. She obtained her PhD degree from Thapar Institute of engineering and technology, Patiala. Her field of interest is fiber nonlinearity, optical communication system, optical sensor and optical networks. Presently, she is working as an assistant professor in CU, Mohali.
She has published 31 research papers out of which 26 are in international journals (SCI) and 5 in international conferences.
MOHAMMAD TARIQUL ISLAM (Senior Member, IEEE) is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Systems Engineering, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and a Visiting Professor with the Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan. He is the author and coauthor of about 600 research journal articles, nearly 250 conference articles, and a few book chapters on various topics related to antennas, metamaterials, and microwave imaging with 23 inventory patents ¿led. Thus far, his publications have been cited 9400 times and his H-index is 44 (Source: Scopus). His Google scholar citation is 15,000 and H-index is 52. He was a recipient of more than 40 research grants from the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Education, UKM research grant, international research grants from Japan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. His research interests include communication antenna design, metamaterial, satellite antennas, and microwave imaging. Dr. Islam has been serving as an Executive Committee member for IEEE AP/MTT/EMC Malaysia Chapter, since 2019-2020, the Chartered Professional Engineer (CEng), a fellow of IET, U.K., and a Senior Member of IEICE, Japan. He received several International Gold Medal awards, a Best Invention in Telecommunication Award for his research and innovation, and best researcher awards at UKM. He was a recipient of 2018, 2019 and 2020 IEEE AP/MTT/EMC Malaysia Chapter, Excellent Award. He also won the best innovation award and the Best Research Group in ICT niche by UKM, in different years. He was a recipient of Publication Award from Malaysian Space Agency, in several years. He has supervised about 50 Ph.D. theses, 30 M.Sc. theses, and has mentored more than 10 postdocs and Visiting scholars. He has developed the Antenna Measurement Laboratory which includes antenna design and measurement facility till 40 GHz. He was an Associate Editor of IET Electronics Letter. He also serves as the Guest Editor, SENSORS journal, and an Associate Editor for IEEE ACCESS.
Dr. RS Kaler is a Senior Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Thapar University, Patiala. He is the author and co-author of about 193 research journal articles, nearly 111 conference articles, and a few book chapters on various topics related to Digital signal Processing, Microprocessors and Microcontrollers. Thus far, his publications have been cited 1169 times and his H-index is 19 (Source: Scopus). His Google scholar citation is 2091, i10-index is 66 and H-index is 24. He is the recipients of more than 5 research grants from the University grant commission, New Delhi, All India Council of Technical Education, New Delhi and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, New Delhi. His research interests include Fiber Optics Communications, Optical Networks, Optical Sensors, Free Space Optics, Communication Systems. Dr. Kaler currently serves as the Deputy Director (Equivalent to Pro Vice Chancellor of University) Reporting of all Deans and Heads of Departments, Schools and Centers. He is the recipient of Shiksha Rattan Puraskar from India International Friendship Society in 2007 and Best Paper Award in International Conference on Information & Communication Technology -IICT. He also got Recognition of research work by NASA, USA in 2002 and 2014 honoured as best author (India) under Research Publications in engineering domain by Career 360 Magazine. He has supervised about 14 Ph.D. theses and 37 M.E. theses. He is a Life Member -Institution of Engineers (INDIA) and Life Member- International Society for Technical Education.
