Imagery of the Rena oil spill disaster, for example, is hauntingly presented in 'Bay of Plenty', and 'Nomura' provides some insight into an issue with gargantuan jellyfish reaching the Sea of Japan, which have even been known to block seawater pumps used to cool nuclear reactors. Poems like 'Leylines' and 'Spiral Dance' remind the reader that there is still beauty and potential in the natural world. As Katherine says in 'Seasons', the natural cycle continues.

After more than twenty years in the Australian Public Service in Canberra, Katherine Buchanan now focuses her energies on more creative parts of her life. As a poet, children's writer and artist, Katherine is inspired by what is happening in her personal life, and in the world more broadly. Although she had been writing all her life and has had several poems published, Katherine took the opportunity to hone her skills as a creative writer with a Bachelor of Writing at the University of Canberra. Studying creative writing at this level has provided her with the confidence and tools necessary for a new writer.
