As Sam slugs it out in the valley, somewhere beyond the highway high up in the mountains Captain Perkin Berger, Sam's cousin, struggles against harsh elements and murderous German intelligence agents in his quest to be the first American into San Pietro.

Commander Mark Bowlin, USN (Ret.) is a somewhat opinionated former naval intelligence of¿cer who believes that the Dallas Cowboys will win this year's Super Bowl, that Texas is truly God's country, and that good Texas barbeque and a cold beer is superior to champagne and caviar in every respect.Mark was a soldier in the Texas National Guard before being commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. Mark has lived in Wales, Japan, and Italy and served in a variety of billets-ashore and a¿oat-in the United States and overseas. His awards include the Legion of Merit and Defense Meritorious Service Medal, among other personal, unit, and campaign awards.
