This core text for primary trainee teachers is a clear introduction to the different kinds of assessment and their purposes. Throughout the book, tasks encourage the reader to practise assessment skills and to reflect on planning, listening, questioning, observing, diagnosing and target-setting. This second edition is referenced throughout to the 2007 QTS Standards and has been fully updated to reflect the Primary National Strategy and key initiatives such as Every Child Matters. There is increased emphasis on peer assessment and target-setting linked to personalised learning. In addition, new material on Early Years observation and foundation/core subjects has been added.

Mary Briggs is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Education, University of Warwick where she teaches across a range of the Institute's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Mary was an Early Years, primary and SEN teacher for many years, including deputy and headship before working as an academic in the University sector.Angela Woodfield is now an independent educational consultant who has spent most of her professional life working in Coventry as a primary school teacher and headteacher.
Dr. Peter Swatton is Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Northampton. Prior to joining the University of Northampton he was a Lecturer in Science Education at the University of Warwick. He leads the Graduate Teacher Programme for the NLMK Consortium for Primary, Early Years and Secondary provision and continues to research into initial teacher education and the development of beginning teacher's science subject knowledge.
Cynthia Martin recently retired from a teaching post at the University of Warwick. She was a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University and led a number of seminars and training sessions in school on how to make effective assessment of learning. Cynthia also has extensive practical experience in this area from her work in schools.
